A remarkable example of preserving cultural wealth and heritage is the “Dashavatara: दशावतार with Odissi chandelier.” This masterpiece reflects the rich cultural and social diversity of our community. Its significance lies in conserving this heritage not merely as a book or scripture but as a tangible household object, ensuring its accessibility to future generations.

The Dashavatara chandelier features the ten primary avatars of Lord Vishnu, the principal Hindu God. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu descends in the form of avatars to restore cosmic order whenever needed. These avatars include Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Krishna, and Kalki.

Incorporating the graceful artistry of Odissi, a major ancient Indian classical dance originating from the temples of Odisha, the chandelier showcases apsaras in different postures, welcoming Lord Vishnu’s ten avatars with gratitude. Odissi, with its roots in the ancient temples of Odisha, expresses religious stories and spiritual ideas, especially those related to Vaishnavism. The dance is accompanied by songs composed in accordance with the ragas and talas of Odissi music, preserving the cultural heritage of Odisha.

The existence of Odissi dance in antiquity is evidenced by the dance poses depicted in the sculptures of Kalingan temples. By celebrating and conserving such cultural treasures, we not only connect with our past but also ensure that these legacies endure for the benefit of future generations.
